This Great Hall, with its wonderfully extravagant oak carving, remains much as Robert Cecil, First Earl of Salisbury, built it in 1611. It was formerly used as a dining room and occupies two floors.
The tables and benches are original though partially restored. The ceiling and walls were enriched by the Italian painter, Giulio Taldini, who added the classical decoration in 1878. The tapestries represent mythological subjects and are part of a set of Brussels tapestry of the seventeenth century, signed by H. Reydams.
