Breaks Manor

Breaks Manor is a Youth & Community Centre. Originally a large Country residence in Central Hatfield and close to the town centre. In 1951 it became a Youth Centre set up to cater for the needs of young people who were the sons and daughters of the many thousands of workers at the then de Havilland Aircraft Company. Equally the town was vastly expanding as a New Town Development. Over those many years the Centre has served Hatfield well and has catered for young people in their 100’s or even 1000’s. The Centre is managed by a voluntary Management Committee made up of lay members of the general public and whose President is the Marchioness of Salisbury. In more recent years the youth work provision has largely been the responsibility of the Hertfordshire County Councils “YC Herts” although the Centre still maintains its own Junior Club provision on Wednesday evenings. Therefore, the Centre now caters largely for the Local Community and has taken on a Community Development Approach. Large numbers of local community groups are now enabled, facilitated and supported at Breaks.

Last year the ever popular Lady Salisbury’s Coffee Morning enabled us to embark on the first phase of our CCTV Security System. Therefore, it is hoped that as a result of this year’s event we will be able to complete Phase two.

St Etheldreda’s Church

Historic St Etheldreda’s Church lies only a few paces from the Old Palace. The West End Project aims to bring 21st century facilities to this much loved building and to make it a vibrant centre for the whole community. We have spent the past year perfecting the designs which include toilets, a kitchen, lift, meeting/exhibition space and a new bell ringing chamber. The plans have been drawn up by a specialist firm of architects who have worked on St Alban’s Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral amongst other buildings of historic importance. These designs have been approved and we are raring to go. We now need your help to raise the funds that will get the scheme off the ground. Succeeding generations have contributed to this wonderful building – now it’s our turn!
