This summer The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, in their fourteenth successful year, are touring Shakespeare’s spellbinding masterpiece The Tempest – a play of soaring poetry, high comedy and tender love.

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on”

This summer the hugely popular company are premiering their show at the prestigious Brighton Festival, before heading off on a tour around the UK that takes in the most significant, historically important and visually stunning castles, cathedrals and stately homes, finishing their tour in mainland Europe in September. Performed in the open air audiences are encouraged to bring picnics, a chair or a blanket and a glass of something chilled this show promises to be another authentic, excellent and magical treat from the company that brought you last year’s riotous farce The Comedy of Errors.

Shakespeare’s late, great gem, widely believed to be the last full play he wrote alone, examines the power of true love, our capacity for vengeance and what it takes to forgive. A play that has mesmerised and moved audiences for over 400 years is just as relevant and powerful today.

“A joyful celebration of the Bard.” Check out the 4 star review from a recent performance click here.

The Tempest will start at 4pm, attendees can enter the event site at 3pm in order to pick their viewing spot, there is no reserved seating.

Advanced ticket holders will be able to enter the Park in their vehicles via Station Lodge (AL9 5AE) from 3pm on Sunday 12th August in order to park closer to the event site. Station Lodge usually acts as just a pedestrian entrance for the Estate, but for this performance it will be accepting vehicles. This event parking will be on grass.

Anyone with advanced tickets wishing to spend the day here and therefore arriving before 3pm will be directed to park in our normal visitor car park (AL9 5HX) and walk to the event site which is approximately a 15 minute walk. Alternatively vehicles can drive round entering via Station Lodge after 3pm to park closer to the event site.

Drop off and Disabled Parking is available closer to the event site, however, there is still a very short walk over the grass from here.

All parking is free of charge. Please click here to view details on how to find us

The Elephant Dell is located in a naturally shaped grass bowl in the grounds of Hatfield House. This location is about a 2 or 3 minute walk across grass, from the car park accessed through Station Lodge.

The nearest toilets are located in Stable Yard which is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Elephant Dell. Please click here to view our Estate & Facilities map

“Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises, Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.”

Peter Stickney, Artistic Director, says, “With some of Shakespeare’s most memorable speeches and packed with famous characters – from the elemental and ethereal Caliban and Ariel to the comic clowns Trinculo and Stephano and the enchanting force that unites them all, Prospero – The Tempest is a spectacular play and will make fantastic viewing for a summer’s evening. A truly theatrical play like this, set outdoors and in our trademark style bursting with song and magic makes for an evening not to be missed!”
