With Bonfire night just passed, we would like to share an exciting fact with you…

Did you know that Robert Cecil, the 1st Earl of Salisbury and Secretary of State to Elizabeth I and James I (and the man who built Hatfield House) played a key role in discovering the Gunpowder Plot in 1605.

A remarkable mosaic portrait of Robert Cecil hangs in the Library. The portrait was made in Venice and presented as a gift to him in 1608.
