Academic Research

The Cecil Papers are available on microfilm in the Department of Manuscripts at the British Library (BL ref. M/485/1-127) and at the Folger Shakespeare Library ,Washington D.C. We ask all researchers to make use of the microfilm as far as possible, before any request to inspect the original documents will be considered.

We are planning to create a website with digital images of the collection on it sometime in the future. By permission of Lord Salisbury, access to the archives is often given to academic researchers working at postgraduate level. Access is by written appointment only. Please send us details of the subject of your research and of the papers you wish to consult. Suggest several alternative dates for your visit and we will respond as soon as possible.

We do not have fixed opening house but are generally able to receive researchers on weekdays between 10 and 5. We do not usually allow visits on more that two days in any single week. Please contact us for further details.
