400th Anniversary

In 2011, Hatfield House celebrates its 400th birthday and there will be a series of celebrations and activities throughout the year.

Celebrate our 400th anniversary year!  You can read Lady Salisbury’s personal welcome and introduction to the celebrations here.

Moore at Hatfield runs until 30th September 2011, and is the first ever major exhibition of the work of Henry Moore within the grounds of an Historic English House.The exhibition features 15 iconic and monumental sculptures, located within the west garden and woodland garden. Among the pieces are Large Reclining Figure which graces Palace Green and makes a spectacular frontage to this magnificent building.

Included in you admission ticket to the House is the Quatercentenary exhibition, which includes Robert Cecil’s copy of the King James Bible. Other fascinating documents are on public display for the first time.

Throughout the year, we are having a series of unique events which will only be held in this one year, including;

  • The introduction of a spectacular sundial, The Longitude Dial, in the Garden
  • The launch of the new Lady Salisbury rose at the Chelsea Flower Show, grown by David Austin roses.
  • On 8th July,  the children of Hatfield and the surrounding area are invited to participate in the Guinness World Record Attempt for the World’s Largest History Lesson.
  • The annual Hatfield Country Show between 19th and 21st August will include activities unique to 2011.
  • The weekend of 9th to 11th September will feature some especially created musical performances, and culminate in a Fireworks Extravaganza with the backdrop of the rarely accessed south front of Hatfield House on Saturday 10th September . Tickets are now on sale for the Fireworks and the fabulous concert with music from The Sixteen. See the Event section.
  • On 16 April, we opened a traditional breeds farm, Hatfield Park Farm, adjacent to the new adventure playground, Bloody Hollow, featuring a 2.5 metre high model of Hatfield House.
