Hatfield House – the home of history

Built from 1607-11 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, and splendidly decorated for entertaining the Royal Court, Hatfield House has state rooms rich in paintings, fine furniture and tapestries.

You’ll see sumptuous Jacobean craftsmanship throughout Hatfield House, such as the Grand Staircase’s exquisite carving and the private chapel’s stunning stained-glass window. Many historic mementoes collected by the Cecils, one of England’s foremost political families, adorn its interior.

“My first visit to Hatfield House, what a treasure this is. Our group had a guided tour of the house and our guide was superb – so knowledgeable. The house is beautiful and lovingly preserved and it is a real thrill to walk through history.” TripAdvisor Review

You have the opportunity to dine at our Coach House Kitchen before the experience continues joining our Head Gardener Andrew Turvey for an enlightening tour of our Historic Gardens. This exclusive experience will begin with Andrew meeting you on arrival and leading you through the West Garden describing the landscape and plants which are grown. Andrew will then lead you into Lord and Lady Salisbury’s private garden including the South Front which allows wonderful views of the southern façade of the House along with views out to the Deer Park which are not usually seen.

The tour will continue into the East Garden where you will stop to admire views of the House across the lake. This will provide you with the opportunity to ask questions on how the Gardens are maintained and developed as well as asking your own gardening questions. Andrew will then lead you back through the Kitchen Garden to the North Front completing your panoramic tour of Hatfield House Gardens.

The house has upheld the traditions of fine Champagne making handed down through five generations. Owning a significant portion of its vineyards, Deutz selects only top-rated grapes from 350 hectares of vineyards in the finest crus of Champagne. The wines are slowly and carefully aged in the cool hush of over 2 miles of chalk-walled cellars far beneath the historic village of Aÿ.
